What doesn’t? Way back in 1866, a young man named John Boultbee Brooks first set about his trade as a leather goods maker in a suburb of Birmingham. About that time, chain driven bicycles were invented and he designed a leather saddle to replace the wooden ones being used. His family business grew until 1958 when in 1962 Raleigh acquired Brooks. But, by 1999, Brooks was forced to liquidate and almost closed its factory doors until Selle Royal (the Italian Saddle manufacturer that was partly responsible for Brook’s demise) stepped in and purchased Brooks. However, this acquisition lead to a modernization of Brook’s image without changing the core manufacturing principles of the company nor the quality of manufacturing techniques.
Brooks saddles are well know for their durability and comfort. The break-in period of these saddles do take time, but, in time, the mold to individual body geometry and can provide some of the most comfortable miles you will feel. This saddle you are looking at has a vintage distressed leather look with the number 1J3 (2001 Jan3). This saddle will certainly turn heads and will make for a wonderful, classic restoration bike project. Tailwinds!
