Condition

This is a very good example of a 1990s Colnago Altain — the paint on this frame is genuinely impressive for its age. The blue-to-white airbrush fade with pink and green highlights is vivid and largely intact. However, please note: the top tube has three small workstand impressions (approximately 10mm each) — these are shallow dents, not cracks, and there is no structural degradation. The top tube is flat and sound. Minor paint chips and chainstay tyre rub are present as expected on a ridden frame. All other tubes are excellent. The chrome Precisa fork is beautiful — shiny, straight, and corrosion-free. BB threads are clean and good. This frame turns heads.

🏆The Story Behind the FrameColnago Altain — Blue Art Decor — Columbus CrMo 4

“Italian Steel, Italian Soul”

  • While the cycling world rushed toward carbon in the 1990s, Ernesto Colnago held his ground and kept building steel. The Altain was his answer: a road frame built on Columbus tubing spec’d specifically to Colnago’s demands, finished with the iconic chrome Precisa fork and the famous Ace of Clubs engravings that have graced every Colnago lug since Michele Dancelli won Milan-San Remo in 1970. This particular example wears a stunning original Art Decor blue airbrush fade — the kind of Italian paintwork that simply isn’t made anymore. Ernesto Colnago’s signature on the top tube is a reminder that this is a frame with a name behind it.
  • This Altain carries two details that make it more than a standard production frameset. First: there is no serial number anywhere on the frame — not on the dropouts, not on the BB shell. For a European frameset sale this isn’t unheard of, but it’s notable. Second: the top tube bears what appears to be a hand-applied signature reading “Ernesto Colnago” — not a decal or transfer, but ink on paint, with the subtle imperfections you’d expect from a marker on a curved steel tube. We make no claim about its origin. What we can say is that Ernesto Colnago was famously hands-on with his frames, his customers, and his sport — a man who personally presented a gold-plated Colnago to the Pope and built custom bikes for Eddy Merckx. The story of this particular frame is one only its original owner could tell. That story now belongs to whoever builds it next.

🚴The Ride
Columbus CrMo 4 is a lively, responsive steel — it has enough stiffness to reward hard efforts while retaining the road damping that makes a steel bike feel alive beneath you. The Altain’s short chainstays and Italian race geometry make this a quick, agile handler. This isn’t a bike you ride — it’s a bike that talks back.

🔧Workshop Wisdom
The three small workstand impressions on the top tube are cosmetic — the tube is structurally sound and flat. A skilled framebuilder can roll out shallow dents, though this will affect the paint. Choose wisely — or wear them as the honest marks of a ridden bike.

Before You Buy – A Note from Paul
I rode this frame for a year. Built it with Dura-Ace first, then full Campagnolo Record. Every time I rolled up somewhere, it got nods — the kind you only get from people who know what they’re looking at. I’m only selling it because it’s a 54 and I more comfortable on a 56. If the size were right, it would still be in my stable. The workstand damage to the top tube happened during disassembly — three small impressions, no structural issue, fully documented in the video. I want the next owner to go in with eyes wide open and zero regrets. I’m Paul — not a chatbot, not a sales team. Message me with any questions before you buy.
