🏆The Story Behind the FrameRocky Mountain ETSX-70 — Serial #2002100237 — Silver / Light Grey

“Born in Canada, Built for Everywhere”

  • In the early 2000s, Rocky Mountain’s engineers in British Columbia were obsessed with one problem: build a bike that climbs like a hard tail and rides over bumps like a Cadillac. The ETSX-70 was their answer. The riders who bought these didn’t want a dedicated XC bike or a dedicated trail bike — they wanted one frame that could do it all, from fireroad hammerfests to technical singletrack to long backcountry days where you don’t get to choose your terrain. The ETS suspension system became legendary for that reason — pedal-efficient enough that XC racers respected it, plush enough that trail riders loved it. This is the bike that a certain kind of rider bought when they were done messing around.

🚴The Ride
The ETS linkage system gives this bike an uncanny ability to pedal efficiently while staying active through rough terrain — set it to 3.5″ for XC efficiency, switch to 4.5″ for technical descents, all with a quick-release lever. The Easton oval-profile aluminum tubes are stiff laterally but forgiving vertically, and the elevated chainstay design keeps the chain quiet and the rear end tracking cleanly. This is a bike that rewards riders who push it — it doesn’t back down from rock gardens, and it climbs better than most bikes with this much travel have any right to.

🔧Workshop Wisdom
The rear suspension uses sealed cartridge bearings at all pivots — inspect and regrease these before first ride. Early ETSX frames (2002–2003) had a known pivot bearing update kit issued by Rocky Mountain; if you’re unsure whether yours has been updated, the pivot hardware is the first place to look if you hear any creaking. The Fox Float air shock is straightforward to service — rebuild kits are still available.
