How to Choose a Saddle

Most likely you’re here because you know what you want. You’re a salty sea dog of cycling and you know what saddles feel best for you. If that’s the case, if it aint broke, don’t fix it.

However, if you’re looking to start your journey, these tips will help you minimize mistakes in saddle comfort.

Sit bones – measure yours. each saddle has a sweet spot where the bones aren’t hanging off the edge nor are they planted firmly on top. We’ll try to give you that sweet spot for each saddle.

Padding – can be a good thing or bad. Too much can cause chaffing, too little can cause uncomfortable pressure points.

Flexibility – stiff saddles allow for greater control and performance, but may lack comfort. Flexible saddles absorb bumps, but pedal power may struggle

Saddle misconceptions

A soft saddle is more comfortable, right? Not at all. It depends. Maybe you’ve ridden the stationary gym bike and they have the large padded saddles on them. You wish that your bike saddle had the same comfort. But, on the road, the dynamics are very different. Softer saddles make you bounce more which causes back problems, neck pain, shoulder pain, and also can be very fatiguing to your rear. Additionally, the added padding can cause increased chaffing.

A streamlined hard racing saddle will make me faster, right? Again, no. Comfort dictates performance. If your tailbones are sore or you keep sliding forward or aft of your saddle, speed performance is severely restricted. Those few extra grams you’re saving mean nothing to the overall power loss you’re experiencing through discomfort.
