Notes from MyBikeThing — The FD-6401 is from the Shimano 600 Ultegra era — the generation that introduced the iconic tricolor stripe logo and repositioned Shimano’s mid-range as a legitimate racing component. Shimano 600 appeared alongside Dura-Ace as the competitive core of the lineup, and the 6401 represents the mature end of that lineage before the 600 name was retired in 1997. Made in Japan, braze-on mount, clean tricolor finish — the right piece for a period-correct late 80s or early 90s road build.

Workshop Wisdom — Braze-on FDs require a brazed tab on the frame — not clamp-on compatible without an adapter. Set cage height 2–3mm above the largest chainring and align the cage parallel to the chainrings before setting limit screws. Bottom pull means cable routes from below — confirm your frame’s cable routing before ordering.

Guarantee — You put in the miles, we put in the work. 30-day guarantee on fit, function, and condition. – Paul
