Notes from MyBikeThing: The BB-ES70 is Shimano’s Deore XT-level sealed cartridge unit — Japanese made, reliable, and still the correct replacement for a wide range of late-90s/early-2000s MTB builds running Octalink V2 cranks. Getting harder to find in good shape.

Workshop Wisdom: Octalink V1 and V2 are not interchangeable — V2 has shallower, wider splines. If your crank says “Octalink” without a version number, check the spline depth before ordering. The BB-ES70 is V2 only. Install with grease on the threads and torque to 50 Nm.
