Ride Feel

Wheels are the single most important part of your bike that can completely alter the feel of the ride. Bike acceleration, control, stability, and comfort are all determined by the wheels.

Many characteristics of the wheel will alter its performance such as: weight, spoke count, spoke type and rim depth.

  • Weight: with weight reduction, you will feel that the bike responds more quickly in turns and in accelerating (especially on the climbs). However, comfort may be reduced to a harsher ride. Stability may be lessened at higher speeds.
  • Spoke count: fewer spokes result in lighter weights and better aerodynamics, but may result in poorer durability.
  • Spoke type: aero spokes can improve aerodynamics considerably without hindering durability. However, due to their profile, may be more difficult to control in crosswinds.
  • Rim depth: deeper rims also improve the aerodynamic component of the wheel. However, this usually results in a firmer ride.
